This weekend was full of action as the remaining Phoenix teams were playing.
On Saturday the 14s stepped on the court. 14 Black at PowerZone and 14 Red at NJ Sports House. 14 Black had a rough start with two heartbreaking pool play matches losing both in the 3rd set. The team went 0 - 3 in Pool D but moved on to the Consolation Bracket where they faced Pool C 3rd place team OCVBC 14 - 2 Brandy. The ladies were victors in that match in straight sets and had a rematch with Allegro 14 Central. Allegro 14 Central defeated 14 Black in straight sets in Pool Play and did so in the Consolation Bracket final. 14 Black still fighting hard and striving to get better every time out.
14 Red played their GEVA 14 Club 3 at home in NJ Sports House and it seemed to be a great tonic for the team. The tournament only featured 7 teams which is a change from usual as the ladies were to only play 2 sets and not play everyone. 14 Red won 2 sets and advanced to the playoffs in 5th position due to a point tiebreaker. In the playoffs, they drew Aspire 14 Tsunami and roared out and won the 1st set 25-18. Unfortunately, the ladies could not advance further and lost the 2nd set and then the 3rd tiebreak by 2 points. Tough day but everyday the ladies are learning and achieving more.
Sunday brings us a home tournament for 15 Red & 15 Black at the PVNJ 15 Club. 15 Black had a good day and is really finishing strong in 2017. The ladies finished 3rd in pool play and finished the day 5-3 in set play. Set play typically occurs when there is more than 5 teams in a pool. The only set losses were to the teams that advanced. Improvements for this group are great as GEVA Club Regionals are upcoming on April 22 at PowerZone in Denville, NJ.
15 Red had an amazing day as Coach Annie and her staff have that squad running on all cylinders. The ladies swept through Pool Play and did not drop a set until the Finals. After defeating Perfromance 15 Navy in the semifinals, the team standing between another tournament title was LBVC 15 - 1. LBVC 15 - 1 was 7-1 in pool play and made easy work of Oxygen 15 in the other semifinal. 15 Red won the 1st set 25-21. LBVC struck back in the 2nd set 25-18 and then won the tiebreaker 15-6. 15 Red fell just short of the hardware but a very good day. 15 Red returns to action April 22 at NJ Sports House for GEVA Club Regionals.
