Playoffs is a good start

This weekend was a good weekend for Phoenix Volleyball NJ as 2 of the 3 squads made the playoffs.

18 Red ventured to All Seasons Sports Academy to take part in GEVA 18 Club 1. The ladies swept through Pool A without dropping a set to finish 1st. Semifinals were next and the opponent was Impact 18s who finished as the 2nd place team from Pool B. 18 Red continued their winning ways and sweeps Impact 25 - 18, 25 - 21.  In the final, Pool B winner was waiting in the form of SOS 18 - 1. SOS 18 - 1 was very formidable and dealt 18 Red their only losses for the day. The mountain was too to high to climb. SOS 18 - 1 jumped to quick starts and although the gap was closed it could not be overcome.  18 Red is back at it this weekend as they head to the OCVBC Shore Classic 18 Club on Saturday.

14 Black got to stay at home and play GEVA Club 14 1 at the NJ Sports House and they took advantage of the facility that the ladies use for practice. The first set vs Apex 14 Mystics was not the best for the team as they lost 25 - 19. The effort improved as the ladies won the 2nd set 25 - 12 and then the deciding set 15 - 4. The next match was against SOSVBC 14 - 2 and this one also went to 3 sets. 14 Black was victorious in the 3rd set once again 15 - 12 which lead to a showdown vs. OCVBC 14 CJ. Both teams were undefeated on the day and in 2 sets 14 Black was defeated but qualified for the playoffs by virtue of finishing 2nd.  In the Quarterfinals, 14 Black drew Pool C winner Fury 14 - 2 who were 3 - 0 on the afternoon. Fury was just too much for 14 Black in set 1 25 - 16. But the ladies fought hard in set 2 taking the match to extra points losing 27 - 25. "The ladies have come a long way in two weeks since their last tournament" Coach Julianne remarked after the tournament.  14 Black next up February 11 at NJ Sports House

14 Red was also in action and the team headed west to Denville and GEVA 14 Club 1 at Powerzone. The day did not go as planned for Coach Karen but Pool B was the stronger of the two. The top 2 Pool B teams finished in the Finals. As the day progressed the team played much better including defeating Cut Shot 14 Elite in 3 sets 15 - 9 in the deciding set. This team is "always learning and growing every time they step on the court" according to Coach Karen. Next tournament for 14 Red is February 11.
